Welcome to Green Street Blues – singing through Covid..
Green Street Blues are a welcoming ladies a cappella choir who rehearse in Sevenoaks, Kent. Our Music Director, Victoria Stanyon, joined us towards the end of 2019 and barely had a chance to get to know our repertoire before Covid hit and live rehearsals stopped. Since that time we have been running various phases of online rehearsals on Zoom introducing new singers to our repertoire and introducing some new repertoire to everyone. Zoom has limitations but it turns out it is also a great medium for doing certain singing skills work. We have managed a few socially distanced outside sings (when the guidelines permitted this in groups of up to 6 in the summer) and we continue to react to guideline changes as they appear to enable our members and ‘Covid-joiners’ to stay connected and enjoy singing together in four part harmony whenever and however it’s possible. If you are reading this and think you would like to join our Zoom sessions please do contact us using the links below. You don’t have to read music to sing with GSB as we use teaching tracks to support learning songs. read more about Victoria click here.
We rehearse on Tuesday evenings moving songs in and out of our repertoire on a regular basis and compete in local and national competitions as well as singing at public or private events. Our chorus repertoire is wide ranging; modern, show-tunes, ‘the Great American Songbook’ and pop. Approximately half of our repertoire is sung in a specific “barbershop style”. The chorus regularly sing in local and national festivals and competitions and also public performances for charity or fundraisers and in the occasional pub – as we are girls who enjoy singing together! All our songs are sung in 4 part harmony which means there is a voice part to suit everyone. Anyone is welcome to join GSB whether or not they have previously sung any a cappella (singing without backing instruments). Many girls who join won’t have sung in a structured group since school but finally decide that singing along to the radio or on nights out is not enough! Choruses are fantastic communities and singing is good for your physical and mental health. As we learn songs with the help of teach tracks as well as sheet music it doesn’t matter whether you can’t read sheet music – many of our valuable members learn via the tapes and the excellent coaching available within the group.
Anybody is welcome to come and listen into a rehearsal to get a flavour of what goes on behind-the-scenes to produce the unique and mesmerising sound of close harmony singing, so why not join us for a rehearsal evening? We rehearse every Tuesday night from 7.45pm – 10.30pm at The Drive Methodist Church TN13 3AE just email us to let us know to expect you.
We’re also for hire! If you’re looking for a unique and awe-inspiring performance for any occasion, whether the full chorus or a smaller group, feel free to get in touch. We are able to put together a programme from our repertoire to suit the needs for your special event.
